
The Active Coating is natural based and can prepare a thin layer of functional protective coating on to the fruit surface. The coating is water based and can be washed easily by water, however, as mentioned the coating is edible and can be eaten. Commercial synthetic waxes for maintaining postharvest quality of fruit can be replaced by this edible natural biodegradable coatings (Active Coating). Active Packaging can protect the fruit from oxygen and also can cease the respiration process of the fresh produce. Consequently, the fruit will have longer shelf-life and much more freshness. The product is supplied to the market as white/beige powder. A dilute solution of this product should be prepared by adding 5 wt.% of powder into the warm water (40oC). Then the solution can be sprayed on to the fruit surface as the functional /active coating. Immersion of the fruit is also carried out for some fruits. The Active Coating can extend the shelf-life of the fruits from 2 to 3 times in comparison with uncoated one. The product is FDA approved and does not make any human health risk.
